Attention, fellow hippies!

I call upon my hippie kin to follow the lead of the queer, who have taken an originally derogatory term and turned it into a label of pride, to embrace the "hippie" moniker. Let's face it: the neo-con squares have been right all along. We are hippies. But consider what a hippie is. Ponder what constitutes the sum of hippiness. Hippies are enlightened. Hippies stand for what's ultimately good. Hippies have escaped the allure of the McWorld and have never looked back. Why avoid the connotations?

My name is Aaron. And I am a hippie.

Just curious: Does that include escaping the allure of potent mind altering drugs, manufactured by enslaved farmers under extorsion?

Just curious: What's it like to be so darn negative all the time? :)

It's a hard knock life, but you get used to it. :)

However, you can't deny that drugs are one of the connotations of the word hippie. Of course people lost in a purple haze won't be fighting, at least until they become desperate for money... if they even have the sense/expertise to avoid bad trips...

Nah, I'm definitely not a hippie. I like possessions, I'm very dependent of others, I tread carefully around new experiences and I don't like it when people use value-laden words, because that invites black and white thinking. Above all, people who have high ideals actually usually make life more complicated for themselves, at least if they try to avoid thinking that they're not living up to them the way they "should". Feeling ashamed over behavior and bodily characteristics the human species has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years is utterly pointless.

But I do like it when people reclaim words. I'm queer, in a lot of ways a geek and definitely a deviant. More specifically, a neurodeviant (I can even proudly claim to have invented that word, at least nobody has used it on the Internet until now).

You're right; many (not all) hippies are into drugs. On the other hand, I would challenge the asertion that enslaved farmers make up a significant percentage of marijuana cultivation. But that's another topic all together.

You've made me rethink my initial enthusiasm (see my latest entry). I definitely share some of your non-hippie characteristics, so I agree that it's not quite as simple as I wanted to make it.

Indeed! Since hippies also seem inextricably linked with long hair in the minds of many people, I sometimes call myself a short-haired hippie, since I cut my hair a few years ago. :)
