| Renfest in the Valley Less than a week away |
[11 Jul 2009|09:58pm] |
AND . . . we are in serious need of volunteers to sign up please. If you are thinking of just arriving and hoping to volunteer, it's really hard to organize because every single one of us will be very busy since we have so few volunteers! My own journal will have more info about the volunteers we need.
July 17, 18, 19th Starts Friday, that's ALL DAY friday, and goes through Sunday.
That's right folks. If you already have weekend plans, there's Friday in the morning and afternoon.
Planning to see Harry Potter? Now you have a good reason to go to the Colussus Langley - It's on your way home from the renfest.

We're not allowed to write about a pub or beer garden on our posters. But, if we DID have mead in a pub if we had one, I'd suggest to stop by before the end of the festival. You wouldn't want to be disappointed if we were to sell out of the mead that we could have if I could advertise it.
Things I'm excited about this year:
Quicksilversmith the vendor - has a little pile-driving type of coin minting system. Create your own medallion / coin and watch others being made. It's fun to watch.
Smoked turkey legs from one of the food vendors- walking around outside with a chunk of smoked meat that already has its own handle - what's not to love? It's kind of like ham, but also like turkey.
The shiatsu therapists - speaks for itself
The guy who sells historic toys and wooden swords. Well, maybe not the GUY but YES about the fun toys!
The cool entertainment. I probably already mentioned the contact juggler. If not, you'll be mystified. Remember those crystal spheres from the movie Labyrinth with David Bowie? His 'stunt' double is an awesome contact juggler, rolling the spheres in nifty ways.
SO that's it for now. Less than a week. Did I menton the free parking before?? :D We will have highway signs up. I helped paint them just last ... thursday? It's starting to become one big blur.

| B.C. Spinal Decompression Therapy? |
[11 Jul 2009|10:11pm] |
Has anyone heard of B.C. Spinal Decompression Therapy?
There is always an advertisement on New1130 and I would like some opinions on it. I prefer the no surgery route.
Thanks

| Venue for 300+ people? |
[11 Jul 2009|01:55pm] |
Hi Vancouver, looking for some advice or leads!
I am throwing a marketing event for SFU Business in November and am looking for a good place to host it.
There are only three requirements so far: Swanky but cheap Has catering for finger foods Can hold 250-350 people
(Optional) Sponsorship from the venue would be superb
Previously, we've held it at the Segal Graduate building, Moxie's, Jennifer Kostuik Art Gallery, etc.
Since we're a student group, we have a very limited budget.
If anyone has any tips or ideas, please reply or email me at nwt[at]sfu.ca!
Thanks!
PS. If you work for a company that may want to come to this event, email me too. :)

| Hair salons? |
[10 Jul 2009|04:16pm] |
|
As I've just moved to town, I am looking for a new hairstylist. I don't want one that I will go to once, but keep coming back to. In Mtl I had my hair cut by the sweetest girl in the most upscale salon spa in the city, and it only cost me $45 (including blowout), so I'm not really willing to pay more. Can anyone recommend a good stylist/salon in the city (they would have to be talented at sleek, asymmetrical bobs)? I've spotted several salons downtown, and I'm not sure how to explain them, but when I look inside, they are one room with only one customer, and 3 Asian people working on one head. It just looks very messy and amateur... Any suggestions? Preferably downtown, East Vans, Kits... not in the suburbs.

| car |
[10 Jul 2009|07:04am] |
Looking for a used car dealer people recommend in an attempt to avoid the creepy, slimey, stereotypical used car dealership that rips you off. Also looking for places Not To Go. :) And bonus if it's along the skytrain or otherwise major bus route. Not that i'm asking for a lot. :P
thanks.

| eye glasses |
[09 Jul 2009|10:42pm] |
I know there have been several posts about glasses in this community, but most of them have been about getting cheap, inexpensive or otherwise super affordable glasses. I care about price, but it's not my main concern.
What opticians in Vancouver have the best selection of frames and the best customer service in your opinion? I am specifically looking for independent optical stores. I used to work in the industry in another city and just much prefer the service and products offered in independent stores. I have a difficult prescription and sinus/pressure issues and value excellent customer service above all.
Thanks!

| New Neighbourhood |
[09 Jul 2009|07:43pm] |
Hello,
I'm probably moving away from a neighbourhood i know and love, Commercial Drive, to live near Joyce skytrain station. Without having spent too much time there yet, what's around there? What do people think of the area?

| Cheap/free contact lens fittings? |
[09 Jul 2009|04:59pm] |
I got my eyes checked this year and used up my one-exam-per-48-months on my UBC insurance. However I did it with the intention of only getting glasses and not contacts.
I am contemplating a trial of a few pairs of contacts because I haven't used them in years and they might be useful from time to time. (And, admittedly, because I want to dress up for a costume party where my glasses would just ruin it.) I called my optometrist's office and they would charge $48-68 for a fitting including one pair of trial lenses. And it won't be covered by insurance at all.
Does anyone know any locations in Vancouver that would do a cheaper/free contact lens fitting if I already have a prescription? With perhaps cheap or free sample contacts?
Edit: thanks for the suggestions. I'll try Robson Optical's free fitting and if that's not so good I'll try Abasa on Davie for $25.

| Police on Kingsway |
[09 Jul 2009|02:13pm] |
I was driving down Kingsway around 11, 11:30 this morning and on Kingsway near Joyce, right across the street from Safeway, there was a bus pulled over with cop cars on either side of it with their lights flashing.
Anyone one what was going on on the bus?

Is the west sidewalk on the Cambie Bridge open to pedestrians or is it still closed due to construction?
Thanks.

| Black Server Aprons |
[08 Jul 2009|11:41am] |
Hello all...
I was wondering if anyone had the DL on where I can find like 20 plain, black server aprons? (The ones with the pockets in front).
I've called Party Bazaar and A& B and a few other places (including some restaurant supply places), but I can't track any down.
Ideally we'd like to rent them, but we could buy them if the cost wasn't too high.
Thanks in advance!!
EDIT: Party Bazaar does have aprons but they didn't understand exactly what I meant....thanks for the help!!

| Volunteering for Vancouver Pride! |
[08 Jul 2009|09:56am] |
Hey everyone!I just wanted to let you all know that It's not too late to sign up to volunteer for Vancouver Pride 2009; we are still accepting volunteers for a few events, including the Pride Parade and Festival, August 2nd. I wanted to make sure the word gets out to everyone in the community, so that no one misses the chance to be a part of this. Sign up sooner than later to get the shifts you want; last year we filled up fast and we anticipate the same to happen for this year. Just this week we implemented a new system where you sign up, get your very own login, and then from there you can sign up for the exact events, shifts, and positions you want... immediately! Absolutely no waiting to be scheduled. You can then view your shifts online any time, instead of waiting for an email. You can either go to www.vancouverpride.ca and look for the volunteer page, or take this shortcut: http://web.volunteer2.com/public/organization/listjobs.aspx?OrganizationGUID=c37d4207-7d2c-4b24-8d55-6c29226b561f&AppForm=1Just click on "I would like to volunteer for this organization" and take it from there! Remember, ANYONE can volunteer. You don't have to be GLBTQ, etc, etc. I get that question a lot =)

| Panorama Racławice, SES |
[08 Jul 2009|09:49am] |
We gave the Esperanto sound files which arono made for Panorama Racławice to the panorama director, who later emailed thanks for the professional quality of the recording. That was pleasing translation work for us and fun cooperation with Arono, and we're happy that the panorama director was so eager to have an Esperanto version of the presentation, so from now on it will always be possible to hear the program in Esperanto. We're going to SES in Slovakia Thursday night, but after a week I hope to have a chance to go hear the panorama program on site!

i know everyone goes on about sugarbox when it comes to waxing, but i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or recommendations for a place to get a Brazilian bikini wax in new west or burnaby or even surrey? i really don't feel like travelling all the way to downtown vancouver to go to sugarbox, although i do hear nothing but amazing things.
i did search the community for this info, but really all i could find were recommendations for sugarbox. you'd think there was no other place in town or something! :P
thanks in advance for the help.
edited to add: seriously guys, not sugarbox. i'm really busy and i guess i didn't stress enough the time restraints i'm under in regards to doing this.

| LOST: Pepper-sprayed dog "Sasha" |
[07 Jul 2009|06:48pm] |
UPDATE: Sasha has been found and reunited with his family. YEAH!
I saw this story on the news this evening. It happened around my neighbourhood, so I thought I would post it as I'm so bothered that the criminals peppersprayed the family pets. The other dog was found, but Sasha is still missing. Sasha disappeared on July 5, 2009 after he and his brother were pepper-sprayed during a break-in. He is a very gentle male Border Collie/Lab cross. His home is in the Rupert and E. 41 Ave. area of Vancouver. If you have any information please call (604) 771-8389 or (604) 338-5920. Reward offered.
